Caitlyn Anne Donation Fund
The Caitlyn Anne Donation Fund was founded in 2006 by Mike & Wendy Hobley, to support those who have been impacted by the unexpected death of a child, particularly where the cause of death has not been identified.
Caitlyn Anne Hobley
Mike & Wendy Hobley lost their 3½-year-old daughter Caitlyn, at 1:40 am on Sunday, 30 July 2000. Caitlyn was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital for Children from the Joondalup Health Campus six hours earlier. She had been seen by a doctor at 10:00 am on the Saturday morning, and sent home. Caitlyn had been a perfectly healthy child with no major illnesses until 36 hours before her death.
A senior pathologist carried out a full post mortem, with all tests and results returning negative. A diagnosis of 'undetermined' was recorded and remains today. Since Caitlyn died, Mike and Wendy have discovered many families who have lost children, and many dealing with the fact that the cause of their child’s death is still not known. Mike and Wendy firmly believe that action must be taken to explore cases where child deaths are recorded as 'unascertainable' or 'undetermined' and to find an answer.
Initiatives and Impact
Over the past few years, Mike and Wendy have provided assistance across WA, including:
-
telephone, e-mail and personal contact support for families;
-
memorial services and bereavement support; and
-
presentations on grief and loss to health professionals and students.
A major achievement to date was the granting of permission from the Coroner to transfer Caitlyn’s autopsy results in to the care of The Institute for Child Health Research. Whilst the original objective of the transfer was to identify an appropriate diagnosis, it was soon realised that with correct procedures and protocols, a database utilising the latest technology is the leading research tool in the determination and future prevention of child deaths not only in Western Australia, but potentially the world.
Therefore, the Caitlyn Anne donation fund supports initiatives that are aligned with the long-term goal of supporting those impacted by the unexpected death of a child where the cause of death has not been identified and the goal of prevention.
