About Minara Resources
Minara Resources Ltd is Australia's second larget nickel producer, and one of the top ten in the world, with headquarters in Perth, WA. Minara owns and operates the Murrin Murrin nickel-cobalt joint venture project (with Glencore International AG) in Western Australia's historic northern goldfields region.

Murrin Murrin is a world-class hydrometallurgical project, utilising high-pressure acid leach technology to recover nickel and cobtalt from laterite ores. Minara's vision is to deliver high-quality products within budget and with the highest regard for its people, their safety and the environment.
Working with Communities
Minara's operations impact on a range of communities, both in the regions where its operations are located, and in the areas within which their employees live. Consultation with stakeholders, including local community groups and government authorities, is an integral part of the way in which the company does business. Minara aims to ensure that communities are engaged and informed, particularly during the planning and development phases at its Murrin Murrin operations. Minara's commitment to local communities encompasses sourcing local employees, services and suppliers. Minara provides training opportunities for current and new employees to attract and retain the highest quality workforce. Minara also provides in-kind and financial support for a range of community initiatives.
What is the Minara Community Foundation?
In an effort to enhance its community support, Minara has set up a community foundation - in partnership with Western Australian Community Foundation - for the long-term benefit of people in the northern goldfields. Launched in September 2007, the foundation will exist in perpetuity for local communities and future generations to benefit beyond the life of the mine.
The foundation will support projects that provide:

educational benefits;

economic, social, cultural and heritage benefits;

economic development, training and education opportunities;
-
transport and communication services;
-
programs and initiatives for future generations; and
-
protection for Indigenous culture.
Funding Opportunities
Minara has made an initial contribution of $1 million to the foundation. In addition the company will commit an annual contribution of $250,000 per financial year over the next five years. The initial contribution to the foundation will be invested. The annual contribution plus a portion of the return on investment will be available as grants to the community. The Minara Community Foundation aim to support projects that provide:

programs and initiatives for future generations; and

protection for Indigenous culture.
In 2008, around $250,000 was distributed to support grass roots initiatives across the Northern Goldfields. A grant of $68,000 was provided to the Menzies Aboriginal Corporation to support the purchase of a new vehicle enabling the group to complete contract work for the local Shire and other stakeholders. Other recipients of the Minara Community Foundation’s inaugural grant round included:

$55,000 to the Karlkurla Language & Culture Aboriginal Corporation’s Language Maintenance program, aimed at protecting and preserving the Wangkatja Language.

$50,000 to the Shire of Leonora, in support of the Leonora Golden Gift community and sporting carnival held in June 2008.

$40,000 to Kurrn Baku Garnbirringu Aboriginal Corporation’s ‘Getting on Your Feet’ leadership program, centred on delivering challenging and fun activities for local youth at their facilities on Moropoi station.
A total of 19 applications for funding were received in 2009 as part of the initial grant round. Five community projects in the Northern Goldfields will be supported as follows:

$50,000 to the Shire of Leonora, in support of the Leonora Golden Gift community and sporting carnival. An iconic national event, the Leonora Golden Gift increases tourism, raises the region’s profile and is free for all participants;

$15,000 to the Karlkurla Language & Culture Aboriginal Corporation’s Language Maintenance program, aimed at recording and preserving the Wongi language.

$10,000 to the Burnna Yurrul Aboriginal Corporation to replace a truck engine to ensure the continuation of maintenance to community housing, provide local workers with opportunities and decrease reliance on outside contractors.

$8,000 to the Leonora Bush Mission for the ‘Holiday Club’, a 5-day program open to all young persons in the Shire of Leonora, offering a range of meaningful health, cultural, community development and recreation activities.

$5,000 to ‘Vibe Alive’ towards the costs of a two-day education and performance festival for young Australians to be held in Kalgoorlie on 12 and 13 August 2009.
