Waroona Community Centre : Youth Development Officer Funding
As part of Alcoa's Wagerup – Willowdale 25th Anniversary celebrations on 7 April 2009, Western Australian Community Foundation presented a second grant to the Waroona community, made available by income earned from donations to the Wagerup Sustainability Fund.
Waroona local advisory committee volunteers (Carolyn Kirkham, Ken Landwehr, Tim Williams, Ian Curley and Noel Dew) identified very early the community need to support services, opportunities and the further development of local young people. As a result of this grass roots awareness, knowledge and expertise Western Australian Community Foundation presented the Waroona Community Centre with a grant in the sum of $5,000. The aim of the grant is to support the activities of a local Youth Development Officer.

An indigenous peer support program based in the Pilbara received funding support from the Howard Read donation fund in June 2007; Western Australian Community Foundation's inaugural grant recipient.
Roebourne Girls FX group received a grant to purchase sewing machines, fabrics and dance wear, including shoes, as part of its efforts to promote a positive peer culture amongst Aboriginal girls in Roebourne encourage regular school attendance. The girls participated in activities such as grooming and deportment, fashion design, modeling, and dance. The program was designed to assist the girls develop their self esteem and self confidence whilst learning a variety of new skills. With the help of the Howard Read grant, the girls learnt to design, sew and model their own fashion creations in a way that reflected their own special culture and environment. The dancing shoes enabled the girls to participate actively in a local dance program. This enhanced their team work in an enjoyable and positive learning environment.
